Each of the components of the Energy Control Systems has two ECS LAN interfaces, with which bus and ring topologies can be implemented (star topologies are not possible). The U1613 star coupler allows for the linking of a given bus segment to three additional segments though the use of 4-wire ECS LAN interfaces. Each of the three branches is equipped with boosters, which increase the transmission range to roughly 4 km if ECS LAN boosters are used at the other end. ECS LAN telegrams are automatically routed by the start coupler, i.e. telegrams are only forwarded to the next network segment if the receiver is actually present within that segment, or in one of the subsequent segments.
